Have you ever had a person who helped you to advance into your career, trusted you, and developed your skills? If so, be this kind of mentor for another colleague.
Mentors help us to learn our job and become specialists in the future. They are an important thing for staying on a job.
It is an important step in our being because all of us arrive to that moment when we have and we are able to give something back to the community.
How to improve your mentoring skills?
- Offer some space for failure and learning
- Encourage taking risks
- Respect the differences between you and your mentee
- Ask for feedback or an explanation from your mentee
- Emphasize the equality relationship
I started being a mentor during the Faculty, at some NGOs. This was good training for the corporate environment.
Taking into consideration the existing differences between generations, it is very important to remain open to the new. If you are used doing things in a certain way, pay attention that your colleagues may be different. Explain clearly what you want from them, ask for feedback, and adapt your way of working to new people.
