Being thankful for working in HR

I am still a dreamer and I still love my job.

During the last few years, I felt the tendency to address bad words to the HR specialists - especially when they are ironically named “girls from HR”.

But let’s be honest: it is a lot of hate on social media. In every domain, there are a lot of good specialists, but also some low-level ones. It says something about ourselves and how we talk about other people, no matter how good they are in their domain.

Respect the person. When needed, give specific feedback one-to-one, not in public.

To the HR people: pay attention to how you present yourself. And be kind to each other.

We are still working in o young industry and we still have to work to grow specialists and set up the right mindset.

That being said, here are some things why I am thankful for working in HR:

  • We can make a difference in people’s lives. When you put the right man in the right role, everybody’s happy. Honest feedback can value more on long-therm than giving an offer and closing a position.
  • Our performance influences the company’s output. Because HR means the recruitment, training and development programs, internal regulations and legislation; it means coaching and support for management and for the teams, it impacts the organization's culture… and so on.
  • We still learn, but we are getting better. As I said at the beginning of this article, we are still a young industry. We have just a few university programs for HR and the training programs are not enough for the needs of the market. Only during the last years, have we just started to learn from specialists from other countries, so there is a lot of improvement space. But we are aware of this and we have the desire to do it.
  • We adapt very fast. Things are working so fast in the market and we learn how to adapt to them. The induction in each HR role is quick because there are a lot of responsibilities and pressure. All these help us to grow professionally very fast.
  • Working in teams and being part of communities. HR is not a single-man role or department. Working on a team can be amazing when you find the right place for yourself.

What about you? For what are you thankful at work?
